Where would we be without...

The Middle East - Well, Turkey provided the inspiration for what we now know as "Turkish Delight" (the most common of which is Fry's - a company bought by Cadbury's). We would also be without cool names like "The African Union" and "The Arab League" which sound oddly like sports tournaments. We also wouldn't have a war at the moment, sparked by 15 years tension between Somalia and Ethiopia. It's unlikely any first-world nations will be involved, it seems like a bit of a tiff that, sadly, is escalating into a full-blown civil war.
The News Media - To bring us reports from the man who can't get squatter out of his house, to the phone company conspiracy: "They're charging you for calls you didn't make". Of course, that's sensationalist media, like most 'reality' or human interest television. Of course, we will hear some worthwhile reports of car accidents, terrible new laws or the latest terror threat, but most of the time it's bad news. In fact, what the hell is good news?
Universities - True, their fees are high. And costly teriary education is rife in the U.S.A. Only rich people can afford to be smart these days. But it's a good system, and once you're in, there is a wealth of opportunity and plenty to learn and discover. But where would a good college be without PARTIES? Yes, universities are most valuable for promoting a wide range of social skills, from deep and meaningfuls to small talk to full-blown organisational talks.
But really... where on earth would we be without....
CELEBRITIES - The regular people who somehow struck it rich by exploiting a unique talent. The mind boggles at how Kate Moss was discovered... although I find her pretty and a unique individual, I wouldn't place her in the same category as the ever-classy Elle McPherson. From Marilyn Manson to Lindsay Lohan, our lives wouldn't be much different if we were famous.
If you think about it, Hollywood (and to a lesser extent, Bollywood) is just an alternate possible universe in which we may have existed. And we can be thankful we don't....
