You will be damned, Make your last stand..

The Offspring, 'Tehran': from their self-titled debut album, 1989. One line that will stay for me forever: "We will win in Iran". Did we? Will we ever win? Sounds a lot like George Bush's famous line "we will win in Iraq". Strange, how history - one way or another - seems to repeat itself. But that begs the question, what did we learn, if we didn't learn from history?
The President said, and still says, "let them die". Islam be damned. Make your last stand in Tehran. Circumstances have changed greatly, but the lesson remains. This world has such a terribly long history of war and violence. Our Governments have us damned, acting in the name of the nation, acting on their impulses - their feelings. The Offspring knew this - before they sold out.
They were right. And they're still right. We all have blood on our hands. We are all guilty of the same prejudice - whether we once thought it, whether we think it, whether we have fought against it since we have known - we are all responsible. No good could - or will - ever come out of the war-torn Middle East. Not with a strong Western presence to quash the resistors. That is not democracy - yet we behave as if it is.
We argue, persuade and justify our trepasses with false knowledge of democracy. It's funny how democracy sounds so much like democrazy and congress seems, logically, the opposite of progress.
Our flags are burning
Our flags are burning
Our flags will burn
Words that echo in your mind, make your heart beat faster. This is no Vietnam... Why does it feel so similar?
