Measured Your Waist Lately?
October 23rd 2008 05:57
In a bid to rescue Australia’s growing obesity problem, the Federal Government has launched a campaign “Measure Up".
The campaign asks "How do you Measure Up?” and includes the distribution of 700,000 specially marked tape measures to health centres and surgeries and anyone who asks for them.
So much was the government alarmed at statistics that had Australia surpassing the United States as the fattest nation in the world, they have invested $30 million in this campaign.
It’s quite a cute idea really. Based on the ideal waste measurements for men of 94cm and 80cm for woman, there is a colour coding – green you’re OK, red – well something needs to be done. The tape moves into red if it goes over 102cm for men or 88cm for women.
One trick that was very common some years ago (for women anyway) was to put a picture of a slim woman – maybe a model or an actor on the fridge. Next to this one, you could put a picture of a much larger person. It made you think before you opened the fridge for that midnight or middle of the night snack.
These days I tend to rely on my clothes to keep me in check. If they start to get tight or even hard to put on I know it’s time for some pretty serious exercise and watching what I eat.

94cm for men?
I'm 87cm and consider that I need to peel off probably another six kilo's.
It's pretty much a blanket approach to health from what I've seen - good intentions mind you - but a blanket approach none-the-less.
Let's see what comes of the investment.
Stay well

80cm would not be my ideal waist measurement either but maybe our nation has just become over large. The campaign for sure is a blanket approach but everything seems to need a gimmick these days.
Thanks for the comment.

I bet you are actually very trim. You probably don't even need a tape measure!

I don't know about setting a certain measurement as a standard--body types are so varied--but Aussies have the right idea about monitoring fat with measurements instead of scale readings.

At 173cm and a weight of 60kg, I don't think you have a problem. You may think so but really I am much shorter than that and I am about 55kg. JUst think about it. And I don't think I would classify as being overweight.
Don't be too hard on yourself. You sound fine to me.
