Voting for Dead People

April 10th 2009 19:46

A democratic system can certainly have very strange outcomes and this was highlighted by an election last week in Winfield, Missouri in the United States. The residents of Winfield were so happy with Mayor, Harry Stonebraker’s performance over three terms they elected him for a fourth.

The trouble is Stonebraker had died on March 11. He will certainly be able to rest in peace with his popularity. Ninety percent of the folks of Winfield voted for him.

The reason for this was a simple one. Ballots had already been printed and absentee voting had already begun when Harry Stonebraker died suddenly of a heart attack.

It’s not the first time this has happened in Missouri. In the 2000 Senate race, Democrat Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash weeks before the November election but still managed to defeat incumbent Republican John Ashcroft.

Is it only in America this happens? In Australia, an election would be called off and a bi-election would be organised. It seems a real waste of administration and voters’ time to go through with an election after one of the candidates is no longer with us. Having said that, the whole situation is pretty funny though. Woudln't you agree?

maybe a dead politician would serve the public better than a live one?

Morgan, I thought you would say something like that. It reminds me of an old skit of Michael Moore's back in the days of The Awful Thruth. He tried to enrol a tree as a candidate.

I think Morgan makes an excellent point. The only negative I can see with having an entire Parliament of stiffs is that, as their lips would no longer move, you wouldn't know when they were lying.

Chris,

Maybe the people of Winfield weren't so silly after all. Maybe they preferred a dead Mayor to a live one.

An entire Parliament of stiffs? That's funny even imagining it.

I hate to say it but, I think Morgan makes A excellent point too.

She couldn't have done it without you, Janet.
Don't let her cut and paste all the credit.

Norm,

I don't mind Morgan taking the credit at all. She made the point, after all.

there's no better insult to a politician than to have to admit that he lost to a dead guy...

Well, really, why should someone not be allowed to do the job if they're dead? All just seems like discrimination to me! If the people want him rotting away in the office then let it be I say!!!

Vote 1, Dead Politicians!!!! Woop Woop!

Janet, base on the case, I assumed that Harry Stonebraker was a very dedicated and responsible mayor during his living life. If not, people won't vote for him four terms consecutively...

May he R.I.P, Amen!

Thanks everyone for the comments:

PC - yes, very counter-productive indeed!

Cibbuano - very good point. I suppose the one who lost was very red faced indeed!

Alt-ed - True, why not just let him rot away in the office if that's what they want

Wilson - True but they mustn't have been paying attention to not know he was dead but talk about winning from the grave

Morgan - Don't worry about Norm. He's just having a go about a comment I made on his post!

Yep, this goes to show that here in America you can see almost anything. But hey, as long as they did this as a joke and not for real its all in fun.
