The Power of Humanity

February 11th 2009 12:29

The bushfires in Victoria are absolutely terrible. There is no doubt about that. More than 180 people have perished in the fires and it is tipped that the toll will reach 300.

You cannot escape the devastation. It is on the radio, the television, the internet. But nor should we.

What has really seemed so remarkable to me is the efforts of other Australians to come forward with help. The campaign run by that great organisation, The Red Cross, has motivated so many other Australians to help where they can. The many donations of money and clothes and offers for accommodation make me proud to be Australian.

I can never imagine what it would be like to lose, not only everything you possess, but loved ones as well. This afternoon I was listening to the radio and heard so many people say they wished they could do more. They can send money and clothes and other things but it just didn’t seem enough.

Nothing can ever replace some of the homes, cars, valuable possessions and memories that have been lost. Nothing can ever replace the loved ones that didn’t make it out.

What can give these people hope it the real generosity that fellow Australians have shown no hesitation in giving them. Altruism is certainly not dead and this horrible crisis that is confronting us at the moment just goes to show how much Aussies bandying together can bring out the good in everyone.

Good on you Australia and good on The Red Cross.

Hi Janet,

I've just woken to find there has been quite a lot of rain in Melbourne overnight. Some more of that would be welcome before the weekend, when the wind conditions are forecast to worsen and create more big problems.

It's touched everyone. I don't think I've met anyone yet that hasn't shed tears watching the news. The sense of community is powerful and palpable.

I don't know how many people I heard on the radio yesterday who had donated money but wanted to do much more than that and were trying to find out what more they could do to help.

It is a great feeling just to hear that.

That sense of community is a wonderful thing. As it sweeps the whole of Australia. this bonding certainly has a power of its own.

It is a terrible tragedy, I feel so much for those people, it is very hard to come to grips with, I just wish I could do more.

I told my Canadian friend - its just Auzzie. Its what we are. We dont let our fellows suffer, simple.

I want to go down there and actively volunteer, but the fact that the fires are still going, the disaster has not been contained yet, Im thinking, they dont want people stampeding down there. Just more mouths to feed and people to protect. I will look into it though.

Thanks for that. I think it makes us all want to do something more active for them. But you are right - many more turning up could possibly make things harder.

I'm sure there will be plenty to do in the aftermath.

Thanks for the comments and for dropping in.
