Why revive this?

September 9th 2008 10:31

Summer is on the way even though our early days of Spring have been more like mid-winter. I love the idea of long warm days and balmy nights when I can put my jumpers away until next year. What I don’t like about the thought of summer is the resurrection of the footwear that had a big comeback a few years ago and won’t fade away.

The rubber thong sadly remains with us. No, this is not a g-string but simple footwear that dresses down anything we want dressed down. Known in other countries as jandals or flip-flops, the rubber thong is footwear that was compulsory Australian attire for many years. They were cheap, practical and were great for the beach or for kids playing around in the street. They were the next best thing to bare feet.

But heavens! They did a comeback in the last few years and are now worn with anything from long dresses, to shorts to jeans to short dresses. In an era that has focussed fashion on sparkle and jewel like tops and at a time when even the most basic footwear has stones and jewellery, the comeback of the rubber thong leaves me baffled.

Fashion, after all, over the last few years (for women at least) has been influenced largely by the women in “Sex in the City”. Flashy and stylish and going much towards dresses and skirts rather than jeans, fashion has become a lot prettier. Even the handbags are decorated with stones and jewels.

Shoes, too, have become stylish with diamantes and stones and jewellery. If you think of it, even mobile phones now have jewellery. So it seems absolutely amazing that the rubber thong has become a “must” for just about everyone’s wardrobe.

Who revives these things anyway? They certainly don’t seem to fit in with everything else that’s in vogue but unfortunately they don’t seem to be going anywhere.

Yeah, I actually love the convenience of thongs.. and really don't see anything that hideous about them.

I'd much rather see a guy walking down the street in a cool pair of Havaianas than a pair of daggy leather jesus saddles.

And are you forgetting the health benefits associated with bearing your toes in summer? Remember donning your favourite pair of flip flops can help prevent this >

How gorgeous Alt_ed!

These pics remind me of the ones on cigarette packets - only for feet. Were you keepng them in your picture storage?

Thanks for the comment.

Alt_ed and Tracy

Point taken. I suppose they are excellent footwear for the shower.

Janet,
There is something remarkably tactile abput thongs [of either genre] but anything that allows our senses to closely interact with nature has to be good for us. The salty wafts of friendly waves on a protected beach are warm as the gentle froth tantalises senses. Come on! Let your toes slip so easily out of the rubber and savour the intimacy, a rare moment when we can flirt with raw nature. Surely there can't be anyone on this earth who would rail against such a magic moment?

I can see the practical aspects of "thongs" and they certainly have their use. But putting them on with a fancy dress seems to defeat the purpose of "dressing up".

I ove them for certain purposes only.
