The Mossad Goes Mainstream – A new era in Political Fashion
March 5th 2007 09:30
The Mossad, Israel’s Secret Intelligence Agency, are certainly not fellas to be messed with. With a list of high profile ‘alleged’ assassinations to their name, they have quickly become an infamous force in Global Politics. Much like the masked spies of Hollywood, The Mossad appear as a fleeting shadow in the night – treading the thin line between protector and villain. However, when a middle class Australian teenage struts around the crowded concourse of a sold out sports stadium, proudly wearing a Mossad brand ‘trendy’ t-shirt – what does it say about the direction of the Western World? Insanity. That’s what it says.
As our society edges closer towards complete consumerism, it seems nothing is sacred. Our lives are used as advertising billboards, our ideals molded to suit the business strategy of generic, self-serving large scale organizations. In an ironic twist to the basis of humanity, the very notion of ‘supply and demand’ has been turned upside down, with ‘big wigs’ instead turning to the ludicrous ‘supply for the sake of supplies’ – believing the mere presence of an item justifies it’s existence. It has become quite apparent that we are no longer consumers, rather tools of consumerism.
The alarming factor in this debate is society’s ever increasing dependence on the dance of consumerism. Big business no longer runs our lives, it is our life. Sure, there are many examples of independence – both in the arts and the financial sector – but when individuality is defined as a trend in itself, we must at least acknowledge our situation. Not that our social position is in desperate need of reform. I am not comparing the evolution of Capitalism to the extreme poverty and political unrest of Africa or the in-grained cultural and geographical confusion of The Middle East. In reality, I would much prefer to be at tool of consumerism than a farmer living under a Mao-like regime. However we tread dangerous waters when blurring the line between the reality of a sales-driven West and a long standing fantasy of democratic freedom.
It seems the world has become a product of it’s produce, willing to sell its name to further a financial mission statement. No longer can an organization, even non-profit, be above the scrabble. For when the Earth’s most secretive political presence sells its name to win the hearts of fourteen year old boys, we might finally have to resign ourselves to the death of financial / social separation. Of course, I may have been wrong, the young man in question could quite possibly have been wearing Mossimo. But who am I to stand in the way of a vaguely interesting, deceptively ‘light on’ social commentary piece?

Its good to see some social intellect in a blog, even if it is ‘deceptively light on’. Keep it up!

You never cease to amaze me. I wouldn't mind having one of those t-shirts. How much are they? I'll have to check it out. I do like this post. It's interesting.
I might buy one for La Trobe this semester. That'll drive bloody Solidarity nuts ( the on-campus socialist alliance group ) . I hate them so much.
DOWN WITH TERRORISM !! UP WITH T-SHIRTS !!
