Sydney Women, Melbourne Women

Scott Schuman - Photo from Sydney Morning Herald

There’s always a little bit of Sydney versus Melbourne banter. Melbourne people always claim to be a little more sophisticated than their Sydney cousins and Sydney people often joke about having to wear a wetsuit to the beach in Melbourne it is so cold.

Melbourne people often see Sydney people as a little crass and abrasive. Sydney people often see Melbourne people as being a little unadventurous and proper. It’s all done with a lot of fun of course, this competition we all have for geographic supremacy.

Well now a real outsider is putting in his two bobs worth about the style differences of the women in these two cities.

Scott Schuman, a New Yorker and writer on a successful blog, The Sartorialist, was brought to Sydney for Fashion Week by Tourism Australia, He shared his thoughts in The Sydney Morning Herald today.

His Sydney visit followed a stopover in Melbourne for a few days where he has made some very personal observations about the difference in the fashion.

In Melbourne, he says, women concentrate on having an intellectual image and have a very serious style and prefer flats over heels, often dummying and dowdying their style down.

Sydney women by comparison, he says celebrate their femininity, work out hard and really play up their beauty.

After a career in fashion marketing, Schuman began The Sartorialist site about three years ago. He takes pictures of stylish people on the street and what started off in New York has now gone international

The blog was rated one of Time Magazines’s top 100 design influencers. Schuman now travels the world attending fashion shows and has a book underway.

Melbourne women (and men) have some really nice fashion, they can take advantage of jackets and scarves and boots and patterned tights etc because of the cooler climate . . . in Sydney we are always battling the heat

I cannot wait to escape Melbourne. It's such a dull place; the weather is so dreary in winter, yet in summer there I feel as though I'll melt into the pavement. How I long for the streets of Paris, where all the women, regardless of whether they are wearing heels or flats, are glamorous!

I actually think he was poking a lot of fun. The woman in the pic in Melbourne doesn't look at all dowdy to me. Don't forget he was talking to The Sydney Morning Herald and their readers would just love to hear that.

Mau (and I hope you don't mind me calling you Mau it's much easier to type!)

I think you have been watching too many movies

You might just be very disappointed in Paris because for every one of the glamorous ones, there are plenty of women who could just as easily be referred to as "bogans".

This post was really a bit "tongue in cheek" because the Melbourne lady looked pretty cool to me - not dowdy at all.

Janet, call me what you like

I think the Melbournite looks a little cranky. Can't she manage even a little smile?

Even the Bogan's of Paris smile

lol

My ex used to compare the cities of Melbourne and Sydney by saying that Melbourne was a brunette and Sydney a blonde. I think that sums up the women and fashion too I guess.

I live in Sydney but prefer Melbourne more because Melbourne has better cafe and nightlife. In my five years in Sydney I have found a lot of women here are very superficial (not all of course) but they will judge a guy by the brand of shoes he wears and are very much focused on what a guy does and how much money he makes. I find it mind-boggling.

I've never once set foot in The Establishment or The Ivy and have no desire to. I'd much rather go see a good band but alas, venues here suck and Melbourne wins hands down.

There is a lot of that in Sydney I must confess but you made me laugh about those jaunts. A doctor of mine's daughter used to call "The Establishment" the dry cleaners because it was full of suits!

I'm past the age where I go out regularly to listen to bands, although I did go recently to that great venue in the city, The Basement, to see someone from a friend's family perform.

I just usually like to go for a relatively quiet drink in a not too busy or loud venue to catch up with friends. I don't know about Melbourne but in the Sydney CBD that is hard to find.

I love the Basement. It brings back so many memories and there isn't really too many places that put on that sort of entertainment around Sydney.

Anyway, you can't just say that following sentence and not finish it. You met a pint sized lady and .......

Yeah, there's not to many venues around were you can sit in darkness and make jokes about how 'gay' the bar staff are

As for the 'entertainment', my pint-sized lady friend proved to be a treat!

MM I think you'd be more correct in saying a 600ml sized friend with metric and all. Yes you definitely meet fun people of all sizes at the Basement

Cibbuano

You can find plenty of brunettes or should I say intelligent women in Sydney - you just have to look a bit harder, that's all!
