How to Smoke in a Pub in England

May 14th 2009 22:43

Most publicans have not exactly embraced the no-smoking policies that have been pushed on them in recent years. Many of them in Australia have actually spent vast amounts of money on very elaborate renovations to their premises to provide an area where many patrons can still enjoy a cigarette. Usually it's a room that either outdoors or semi-outdoors and not connected to the same air conditioning.

Over in the UK, the same measures have been frowned upon by landlords of licensed businesses and since England and Wales introduced a ban on smoking in enclosed public places in 2007, beer sales have tumbled and more than two thousand pubs have been forced to close in the last year.

One landlady of a British pub, the Cutting Edge in Barnsley in northern England has found a way around the law. Following the suggestion of one of her patrons, Kerry Fenton, landlady of the British pub, has opened a “smoking research centre” within her pub which dedicates one room of the pub for the purpose and all locals have to do to be able to smoke and drink in there is to fill out a questionnaire on their smoking habits.

This may allow patrons to smoke and drink within the pub confines at the moment and fulfils all legal requirements for them to do so but it probably won’t last a long time. The local council is finding a way that can enforce the “no smoking” regulation and are adamant that The Cutting Edge will have to fall in line.

When they first changed the smoking laws in Australia, the people I felt sorry for were the small pubs and taverns. Because the big clubs can afford to put in new outside areas, where people can smoke. But the smaller places often aren't able to do that. And a lot of people do link drinking and smoking together. I'm sure there's quite a few people who would prefer to drink at home, where they can have a smoke, than to go to a pub where they can't.

I agree Samaritan

The small ones really did suffer the most and still do, particularly ones that have no outside area at all. Obviously, in England it has been much the same and with a much colder climate as well, it would be hard to go out on to the street.

Thank you.

I dare say it won't last long. They will probably find a loophole for the loophole!
