Chic and Cheerful Advice from Bloggers

February 8th 2009 08:58

A recession, however bad it is, will never be detrimental to everyone. There are always survivors – even those who actually benefit from it. As a blogger I have a hunch that a whole lot of blogs will now start appearing on different ways to both earn and save money.

After all, it’s times like these where cleverness ceases to be judged on knowing the right expensive brands to buy but how to look chic at the lowest possible price. It reminds me of my earlier days travelling and backpacking when it became a kind of competition of who could spend the least on accommodation and food each day.

Reuters last week covered one such blog that began last year. Thirty-something Los Angeles Marketing Manager, Mary Hall, a self-confessed “fashionista” turned “recessionista” started her blog thercessionista.blogspot.com in July.

Offering money-saving fashion tips, Hall claims to have a regular readership of 20 thousand from 80 different countries including Britain, India and China – and that was before the Reuters story. Her readership is bound to have escalated in the last few days.

On her blog, Hall doesn’t restrict her tips to fashions. Her money saving advice ranges from making your own cards to cooking and cheaper wine and it can hardly be said this is entirely a fluke. Hall has obviously sensed the mood of the world and adapted her blog to it.

Our own Orbler, Cheryl J (Zentertainment, Rhythmatism) added a new blog to her list in October with Budget Centsability, her first posting being Sense and Centsability.

Even though this is not her primary blog, Budget Centsability climbed to near the top of the popular blogs on the Orble site quickly and has remained there ever since. Using her experience, wit and great writing skills, Cheryl gives advice on saving and earning money ranging from cheaper waxing to petrol to using loyalty cards to their best advantage as well as earning extra cash on the side.

Of course Hall has had other events go in her favour. Her timing for one was excellent as well as her choice of blog name. Recessionista has become a trendy word over the last year and last week was listed on the Macmillan Dictionary Web site as the word of the week and according to the Global Language Monitor is one of the top fashion buzz words of 2009 along with “chiconomics”.

It has not all been luck. Hall has shown us the entrepreneurial side to blogging and made it work well and often in most things, timing is everything. If the current recession lasts as long as some of our experts predict or even turns into worse, these blogs are bound to become some of the best read on the internet.

Nice thoughts, Janet. Well, your social critic isn't that bad at all, at least it's one of the top 20 Orbler's blogs too!

Recessionista's a great word, isn't it? Good to a blogging success story.

Yes, Chris, it's a great word. According to the article it refers to someone who still wants the style but avoids the expensive brands and seeks out much cheaper but still chic options.

Good on Hall, I say. I'll just have to put my thinking cap on and try to predict what the next trendy word will be.

Thanks for the comment.

I sense a kinda kindred spirit between yourself and Cheryl J - which is a great tag team pairing if I may say so.

Recessionista's is a great word - perhaps we should all get our collective thinking caps on and come up with a few new speak terms.

Stay well

Thanks MNG

I thought Cheryl's blog was a great idea when she created it. If only she could get a mainstream news site to talk about it, she would be laughing.

Thanks for the visit and take care.

Ooh~ "money-saving fashion tips" - I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).

And like you've said, Cheryl's blog is a pretty great idea. I particularly liked the post on Focus Groups.

Good post, Janet!

Trust you to take a different slant on things! lol. But the reality is that a lot of people have had to be cheapskates throughout the whole "economic boom".

So what if the top designers now find their customers choosing cheaper imitations? They should have looked after everyone - not just the ones at the top!

Thanks for the comment.

Yeh, I agree. Everyone is now at a more level playing field.

Thanks for the visit.
