The first time ever I saw her live
February 13th 2009 08:24
Roberta Flack is fantastic in concert and I had the good fortune to see her last night backed by our own Sydney Symphony Orchesta. Having never seen her live before, I was surprised at the power and ability of a singer who has entertained us more more than three decades.
I had such a good time listening to all of those favourites from “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” to “Killing Me Softly with His Song”. Ms Flack also has such a great personality and presence on stage.
Even if you are not a diehard fan, you cannot have escaped the many hit songs she has brought us over the years. “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” featured in the Clint Eastwood movie “Play Misty for Me” and won the 1973 Grammy Record of the Year. “Killing Me Softly with His Song” won the same Grammy Award in 1974.
Her duets with Donny Hathaway in the 70s showed she was just as good in collaboration as with going solo with “Where is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You”.
While her popularity tends to veer towards the older generations, her songs are sung by performers at venues for all age groups over and over.
Every reference to Roberta Flack on the web has her birth year varying from 1937 to 1940 but even so, the more conservative one of 1940 would make her 69. Looking at her you would never guess.
I was only there because my sister had offered me her ticket because other things prevented her from going but I am so grateful for my sister giving me the ticket. It was such a good way to spend a Thursday night.
And if you missed her this time, Ms Flack announced they were planning to put together a benefit concert for the victims of the fires in Victoria. Ms Flack and her entourage will be performing for free if the concert can be arranged. I would recommend seeing it if you get the chance.
