The Ultimate Fantasy is Almost Here !
January 1st 2007 11:36
The gaming world is buzzing as the PS3 is just about here. PC users and Apple lovers alike are waiting with bated breath for the world's latest digital prodigy to arrive on their doorstep. But someone, in a far corner of the globe is shouting "WAIT ! Please wait !!".
What are we waiting for? We have sliced bread and finally, this is our butter! Yes and no. With hardware so sophisticated, a simple glitch such as the PSone's "Disc Read Error" can go quite unnoticated. And much like the Parental Advisory stickers on Eminem's CDs, you've probably heard that before.
Hardware problems can cause a world of grief for hardcore gamers - especially the impatient ones (like myself). This time, Sony could have gotten anything wrong! There are three media card slots for Memory Sticks, SD Cards and the like. It also has a number of USB ports and Bluetooth controllers with motion sensors. This is like buying a bear trap for your living room and hoping the kids won't step on it. So much delicate hardware means so many potential problems.
Just as the QCTimes said, "most of the launch games are either 1., available on other systems, too; or 2., not very good." Very true. But you have that problem with most systems. Trial and error is the name of the game.
Furthermore, owning the PS3 now is like having a swiss army knife at a nightclub. It's just not practical. Yes, the system is backwards compatable, but it's Bluray-compatible DVD player is kind of useless without a High Definition (HD) TV, and the numbers of Bluray DVD films actually in circulation is minimal. There is just no use for that kind of technology right now.
But if you've already commited to pre-ordering one, then you can delight in the fact that the PS3 will be better equipped to handle graphics than any gaming-spec PC, with 3.2GHZ Cell Broadband Processor and a graphics card equalling the G-Force's latest model!
If you have a PSP, it doubles as a controller. The PS3 is really just a super-computer so you could pull it apart and change the HD and USB ports around. It seems to be a neat system, so rebuilding it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
The Bottom Line: The QCTimes is right, I'd wait til the PS3 comes through with a few shipments and drops in price. You'll need the extra cash to buy the 60GB hard-drive. Downloadable content can add up.

I'm not really into these.
But I like playing computer games, even the ones for kids.
Use the elcheapo Real Arcade, got it for free, I like some extra activity for the brain.
Any suggestions, like computer chess in real life, like playing with people too but don't like going to clubs etc, been there, done that.
My chess mates died, unfortunately, haven't been able to find any new ones, even offerred to teach but they run a mile.
So what more is out there for me. On the computer, I mean, I'll have to look for real people myself, my time will be very limited once again in a couple of months but thought as I am here visiting anyway, I'd ask.
You are going to do very well, wherever.

PS3 prices are dropping on eBay, shop shelves are filling up with ps3 consoles no one is buying, people are trading in their 'unwatned' ps3's for Wii's.
THe Blu-ray player, the one major selling point, built into the playstation 3 is subpar in its output quality compared ot the hd-dvd add on of the xbox 360.
The playstation brand has lost a lot of its market appeal and it isn't going to be getting it back.
However in sony's favour the engineering is pristine and the hardware is generally up to the task, pity it will probably break down in a year if the playstation 2 was anything to go by.
The funny thing is you can't say 'too little too late', what you can say here is 'too much, too late, too expensive'.
The Playstation 3 is so caught up in being anything but a games console it has lost its target audience and it's showing in terms of interest in the hardware.
People cry hardware shortages, I'm laughing, I can get a playstation 3 off of ebay (I live in australia) for ~$1100 AUD with two games, the price for the raw ps3 to launch in australia march(ish) (unconfirmed btw) of 2007 is $1000 AUD. So much for low supply/highdemand, i'm not supposed to be able to buy one if it really is THE thing to own, let alone be able to buy one that cheap.
BTW the graphics card is a cut and paste 7900GT but slightly more geared towards graphics processing, that is nVidias last generation card, their latest and fastest is the 8800GTX which si in fact more powerful than RSX (ie the 7900GT they stuck in the ps3).
Add insult to injury the much hyped 'CELL Broadband engine' is little more than a completely whacked out powerpc processor, the exact same kind of processor is in the Wii AND xbox 360. The hwole idea behind CELL is to save money for sony, it's potentiol looks good on paper sure, but in practice no one can use it which has led to the end where all cross platform games look distinctly better on the xbox 360 than they do on the playstation 3.
So far there are like 5 people in the whole world who know the CELL processor, and they all work at IBM. Everyone else has to read a 600 page manual about how CELL works to use it to its (supposedly unreachable) full potentiol.
Ok, in short, cut your losses and get an xbox 360/nintendo Wii now rather than wait and be dissapointed.

Thanks for stopping by ! Yeah, online gaming isn't really my thing. But I do love Zone.com's Internet Checkers. Chess is available too, I believe. It's a wonderful website. You'll probably find these games under the Start menu - All Programs - Games; if you're running a PC with Windows.
Some people I know like Yahoo.com's online games, but you need to be registered and everything. I find it a pain and less exciting than the atmosphere of MSN's Zone.com.
I'm sorry to hear about your chess buddies. I hope it all works out for you.
Yours Faithfully, Anthony

Well IBM did help the design the PS3, so that would make sense. The 600 page manual you are talking about isn't important, because all you do is slip the game into the PS3 and Cell combines with the RSX to produce graphics that, I must say, are far beyond the capabilities of the X360.
Forget the screenshots, Sony's system - like the PSP - will shine once developers know what to do with it. The Xbox seems to be more familar. I didn't know anyone could buy the PS3 yet. I thought The shipping date for Australia was March sometime.
I don't know enough about the 8800, but the PS3 outperforms two GeForce 6800s, with power to burn.

But I'd still rather get a Wii!
And the XBOX games look pretty good, even though I don't like the 360. Dead Rising? Oblivion? Gears of War? C'mon!

Haha, I loved reading both Ahmed and your comments.....it's like you two were speaking greek....or should that be geek??? lol.
I'm not really into games....my hand eye coordination is nothing short of pitiful. However, I have just discovered Singstar on PS2. Can I say I LOVE Singstar.....yes, I'm very sad. So now I'm thinking of getting myself a Playstation.
I was wondering whether to just get the PS2 or to wait for the PS3. But it sounds very complex and I feel that I would only break it. They need a high-tech hardware system for low-tech geeks like me.
I like the look of those Wii's. Of course I'd also be likely to do myself an injury playing, so perhaps it's better I stick to singstar and just accept that I'm a gaming loser! : )
Hope you had a great New Year!

You're absolutely right. I have no respect for Microsoft and refuse to support Gates' organisation. Although I do run windows... Hmmm.. Anyway, the Wii is very popular. I just wish I could into the games Nintendo has to offer. I prefer Sony's range, though the 3rd Gen PS will be pricey...
Kylie !
HAPPY NEW YEAR !! You know secretly, I'm a gaming loser too. I would love to play SingStar, but I am a young male with an image to uphold. Sony is definately your brand. They love making money off ridiculous peripherals and expensive games. PS3 is a very intense console, and the new-ish streamline PS2 is very cheap... Up to you, but if your not a hardcore gamer, then your decision is made for you...
The Wii sounds like your thing though. Maybe you should head to Myer and test it out (if they have one set up).
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL !!! Thanks for posting

Thanks for the tip. I think PS2 it is for me. My friends are actually frightened that I'll get one. They already despair of me, and there's no way they'll play Singstar. I think if they loosened up and made fools of themselves every now and again they'd be a lot happier. If you can't laugh at yourself, what can you laugh at.
Of course with an attitude like that, I'm going to be single forever.....good thing I already have a cat. LOL.
