Craigslist Ad Causes Eviction

March 17th 2009 06:35

In my previous post on the current worldwide trend of bartering, I drew reference to a creative bartering idea where a New York Funeral Director had offered a free funeral in exchange for some home renovation work.

It has now come to light that the idea wasn't such a good one after all. The offer was listed on Craigslist by 51 year old Peter Dohanich but he was forced to withdraw the ad after it generated too much media attention and his landlord evicted him.

Why you may ask? As things turned out, his landlord, James Donofrio, also works in the funeral business and is owner of Blair-Mazzarella Funeral Home. The whole frenzy had highlighted his tenant’s profession and he now sees Dohanich as his competition and is uncomfortable renting to him.

The ad may have caused a major stir with the media but little response from elsewhere. Dohanich says he had only a few sincere queries about the deal. He is now looking for a new place to live.

Maybe there will be enough exposure for the Blair Mazzarela Funeral Home to cause a boycott.

Poor Peter, I hope he have a shelter and doesn't live in the street right now, Janet...

It does seem like a pretty bizarre reason for evicting him.

Umm, unless I'm very much mistaken, he can't be evicted. The landlord can tell him he no longer wants to rent and give him one to three months' notice, but he can't throw him out. Journalists just love to use scary words.

Still sucks for him, though.

I don't really know the rules about this stuff in America. But hey, that's what they're saying.

I feel sorry for the guy, but above all this is just a damn funny story!
