' Face it - You're FAT! ' say experts

And obesity used to be funny...
A new study has been working hard to produce some startling new evidence: Australians aren't just obese, they're short too.

The saddistic study shows that as much as 65% of the island's population may be overweight, based on a sample size of 1500 adults. They were asked to estimate their height and weight that followed up with their actual, clinic-accurate measurements.

The results show that people tend to underestimate their weight by about 2kg and overestimate their height by roughly 1.4cm. That makes for a big difference when calculating the average person's BMI. In fact, it can take an overweight person into the healthy weight range and give a false reading on their wellbeing.

It's a well known fact that people tend to estimate their weight - and studies have shown that people who don't weigh themselves regularly lose less weight than those who are conscious of it. When you consider the results across the board, as much as 3000kgs were unaccounted for and 70 feet of height that never existed. That's approximately 11 6-foot people in false height and 37.5 average-weight (80kg) adults in body tissue that many don't think they have.

And those are just the figures for roughly 0.02% of the country's population. Perhaps the issue is as much psychological as it is physical.

We Yanks have blazed the trail of fat and refusing to admit it. I prefer that the good people of Australia not follow.

Psychology is an interesting field. I had no idea people think they're taller than they are.

Anthony, how are you?

Unfortunately, Canada is getting fatter too. But I did notice that city folk are a lot slimmer than our country friends.
Perhaps because city people are more into health, fitness, fashion since it is all around them and easily accessible.
While the countryside is more isolated, fewer opportunities (for example, small towns are not going to have too many gyms, if any), and pretty much everyone they see is obese.

Hey, yeah I'm good thanks. I've been so busy. It's hard to find time to get everything done.

It's sad that Canada is following suit. With all that water, you guys should be super slim. All that natural fluid is supposed to help with muscle development and weight loss. The world is certainly becoming more aware of their health, but it's very difficult to shed the extra kilos when what you really need is a lifestyle change.

I thought country folk would be thinner because of their hard labour - farming, gardening, etc. I think city people need to be getting to the gym when there's a fast food joint on every corner and a Gym every third block. It's getting beter though.

How have you been, Peg ?

Well, I just had a large Starbucks coffee so I'm all hepped up on caffeine. You notice I didn't call it a Grande. I refuse to say anything other than small, medium or large as I feel rather silly asking for a "grande" and so on. I'll assume Australia has been overtaken by Starbucks Coffee Shops on every corner much like N.A. has.

My friend, there are many a new development in my life these last days. I sold a duplex I own for a nice profit, I just got a new job I will begin next week & I have a great party to go to for New Year's!

Things were looking not so great a couple months ago but its all worked out now, as life tends to.

Anthony,

0.25% that calculation sounds a bit high to me.

katyzzz... I don't KNOW my height and weight, so if there are others like me they seem to be pretty good guesses. And they probably don't understand the difficulties in getting it wrong. I'm all FOR my fellow human beings.

katyzzz... LOved the piggy pics

It's very high. It was assuming there are only 600 000 people in Australia. I goofed it. Its modified now though. I made a mistake. Sorry, It was supposed to say 0.02.

Yeah I know what you mean. Most of my friends don't know their height and weight, so when they work it out they tend to be very kind to themselves. Everyone I know underestimates their weight.

Hi Anthony,

There's nothing like having a country of self appointed optimists.

Love & stuff
