That’s What I Call Leadership
December 2nd 2008 05:08
They may have been adversaries not very long ago but that isn’t going to get In President-elect Obama’s way when assembling a good strong team to help America nationally and internationally.
Obama’s announcement of his intention to appoint Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State highlights the qualities of the next US President in that he can rise above petty politics for the good of the country.
The choice of Clinton is a good one from many angles, her experience as First Lady being one of them. In an article in The Sydney Morning Herald today, Naomi Wolf analyses Obama’s choice. One strength Wolf points out was the lengths Clinton would go to discover life for many women around the globe.
Rather than staying in air conditioned comfort when travelling the globe as First Lady, Clinton visited the slums. sitting with women and learning about their lives, the poverty and the laws of their nations.
An extract from Wolf’s article reads:
But what distinguishes Hillary Clinton from Madeleine Albright or Condoleezza Rice is where she was willing to go for her education. She did not stay in the air-conditioned hotels and the parliamentary chambers of the nations she visited; she went to tiny impoverished villages, to places where women walk six kilometres a day for water, to places where women were basing their families' prosperity on a $20 loan for a sewing machine. She sat on mud floors and sandy village commons to hear from these communities about their issues and priorities, and she took on controversial and culturally sensitive subjects, such as female genital mutilation and bride burning.
Yet the respect she showed for the various cultures and people whom she was engaging did a great deal to allow such challenges to move forward without bitterness, and in a spirit of real dialogue. Hillary is adored by many women in the developing world for those journeys, and I am certain that they taught her crucial lessons about global policy - lessons that built up a world view that Obama, a child of international experiences, also shares.

This certainly stands Clinton apart in the diplomatic corp. How different is this style from most of our diplomatic globetrotters. We only have to recall some months ago when leaders of the G-8 (Group of 8) met in Japan. While staying in luxurious accommodation, eating the world’s finest foods and drinking some of the most expensive wine, they discussed such important global issues and how they should be tackled such as climate change and world poverty.
This particular part of Clinton’s history was unknown to me before I read this so my opinion of her has certainly strengthened. So too, has my opinion of President-elect Obama who is not only willing to rise above petty politics and past differences but also is not too afraid to put the experience where it is needed most.
That Is what I call real leadership.

I happen to think Hillary Clinton is a good choice for Secretary of State. I actually didn't think it would happen. The spin doctoring I think was them showing the public their support for each other BEFORE the election. But that was because both really wanted Democrats to come through.
Obama doing this now when there is not an election in sight is a great move in my opinion. A lot of politics is indeed spin but they need some people in key positions who KNOW things.
Just think - Sarah Pallin just may have been Vice President. Now if anything was spin, her appoinment as running mate to McCain surely was.
Thanks for visiting and giving me your thoughts on the matter.
