Listen to the Music
December 21st 2009 06:51
No-one would ever dispute the theraputic benefits of listening to music. We don’t need to read about the lengthy studies that have been done on the subject to know that music can really put us in a happy frame of mind. Listening to music while doing a run not only makes the run more enjoyable, it has been said that it can improve our performance as well. Now researchers also believe it can have remarkable effects on health and illness too.
According to research conducted by the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia, music can do a lot more than that. Recent studies have concluded that music from classical to modern can have a lot of health benefits for adults and childen alike, including reduced stress levels, lower blood pressure, less anxiety and a reduction in pain.
The results are even more obvious after exposure to live music, the researchers say. The studies go further saying music can also treat autism and dementia and can have help those with intellectual and learning problems and people with limited verbal skills.
That is a pretty good remedy. So is singing, although most of us are not confident enough to do it ourselves. Many people I know who do sing whether it is in a choir or live often tell me what a high they reach after bellowing out a good old song.
A few years ago I saw the lovely Swedish movie As it is in Heaven about a conductor who goes back to his home town in rural Sweden and directs the choir. The movie was a surprise hit here and lasted for more than a year in my local cinema.
We may not be up to singing but we can certainly turn to music when we are down or sick. If nothing else, it will certainly make us feel better. The Sydney Symphony plays to very ill kids in hospitals with remarkable results and at Christmas time, lots of singers love to play to the kids to see the smile on their faces.
Music can do wonders and the more they research it the more good they all see that it can do. So-sing-a-long! Or at least, wear your ipod!

Like It Is In Heaven was a movie experience matched in recent times for me only by Les Choristes. It's wonderful what people can achieve when they serve objectives other then self-serving ones.

It is one of the most underrated sources of conditioning I think I know. It transends the ages, it enlightens and offers brain food to boot - but best of all it is a feel good remedy that we can all relate to.
A Merry Christmas to you to Janet and all your readers.
