The Men’s Room
October 8th 2009 04:14
According to an article in The Sunday Times this week there is a trend in America, for those with money at least, to build a men-only sanctuary in their homes.
It’s called the man cave and it’s a room or a section of the home where men can have all their favourite gadgets, childhood memorabillia and sports paraphernalia. Some are even know to have motorbikes and flatscreen televisions with at least a refrigerator or a kegerator (a fridge that cools down the beer keg).
It is a place they can do the boy stuff. They can have their friends over, play with their toys, watch sports and drink beer all at the same time. In most cases kids and wives are banned from the area and it’s strictly men-only.
Brad Pitt, who has homes in numerous places and not one who is particularly short of a penny, is just one of the men referred to in the article. In one home alone, his man cave has a vintage wurlitzer jukebox, several flatscreen televisons and motorbikes including a Harley-Davidson Bad Boy and a Confederate Hellcat. That’s some man cave alright.
Most people who talk about the men caves deny they are a blow back to the den or the garage where men did much the same, although probably a lot more moderaterly and more cave-manlike than today’s man cave.
It strikes me as being a revival of much of what was pretty much the norm decades ago. Having mates over to watch sport, play pool just hang out was so common years ago and the current trend just emphasises how important these things are. Maybe too much fine dining and attending VIP functions has brought out the boy in those who yearn for good old matey stuff.
Now, in Australia at least, men tend to go to the pub or clubs to do exactly that. Many pubs and clubs long ago saw the benefit of installing large screens and Foxtel to show all sports and putting pool tables in wherever they could fit them.
The man cave may catch on in Australia but for one thing, people have to have a spare room they can claim to create this “cave”. In America at least, the whole trend has generated real business for the pool table industry, the wide-screen television manufacturers and so many more products. It is like a whole new home decorating business of its own.
How many men here could get on to the bandwagon is yet to see because it is really just like a 21st century yacht.

do women in the USA not like pool and sports and beer and gambling and cars?
because most of the women i know here in Australia like all of those things and just incorporate them into their everyday living

American women probably do like them but I think it is that thing with men that they have to have them as toys or something and then feel good when their mates come around. Like showing off really.
