Fishing from 'a well of poison'...

DEATH to Labour !
Australia is now counting down the Federal election. Well, they will be when Christmas ends. But all the signs are present. There's been a challenge to the Labour leadership. Check. Kim Beazley has made some crazy, babbling comments that no-one really understands or takes notice of. Check. And the Liberals are counting their votes before they're polled. Check check and check. Yep, it's another four years - another whacky election fast approaching. Yet something feels different.... "Dr. Death" is the leader hopeful...

Kevin Rudd, the second most well-known Labour politician, is nicknamed "Dr. Death" for his radical plans - namely his restructuring of the Queensland public service. But when you consider his on-air antics, it isn't surprising that some believe his 'media promiscuity' has won him leadership. In the other corner, you could picture Kim Beazley twitching nervously, biting his lower lip in a vain attempt to look pensive, not intimidated. He must have looked spent, but relieved, now. It's over, he lost the leadership. Channel Nine reported that his confusion of Republican Karl Rove with recently widowed Australian icon Rove McManus may have been detrimental to his social standing.

When Laurie Oakes noted that same day, that Labour is a party of "vicious, mean-spirited people", I don't believe anyone was surprised. When he followed on, however, to say that Kevin Rudd would need to drain the "well of poison" to unify the party, I'm sure John Howard was giddy. And why not? It is believed that those who voted for Rudd were driven by the thought of victory, not by personal preference. If his own colleagues don't like him, why would the public?

Why should they? Who knows, but the Rudd and Gillard camp have 56% popularity. Mark Latham showed similar results last election - and the Liberals won in a landslide. It's unpredictable - but with the radical, nerdy 1974 high school dux take the helm - Labour may have a chance. And he won a cooking competition with a chocolate cake. What potential for a prime minister ! In the Tarot deck of Australian politics, will the nation draw the Death card?

It'll be interesting to see what happens. Kim had to go. Labour hasn't been able to win with him leading them so far, and next election wasn't going to be any different. Can Kevin win? Hmmm...not sure. But they certainly have absolutely no chance while there's all the infighting going on. They better fix it soon too.

I don't think I can take another term of Howard as PM. He's as embarassing to Australia as George W is to the US (in my opinion anyway).

Hmm.. A lot of people consider me very right wing, and I probably am - but only because I dislike extremists and rude people. I'm sure they're not all like that, but I think they need to consider theyre behaviour. We are unlucky to have such poor quality politicians in Australia. I quite liked Natasha Stott Despojia.I was a Democrat-lover when she was around but turned to the Liberals because they seem polite and good with money. Howard is embarrassing - but he's so cute too.

Oh well. I hate Kevin Rudd - he just exudes arrogance, and he has no reason to be. That's just my two cents. Thanks Kylie !!

howard is cute?? eh, well...each to their own i suppose. although i am neither a liberal/national or labour supporter, i sincerly hope that rudd and gillard can put a stop to the factional bickering and defeat howard at the next election. i think it will also be interesting to see how rudd re-shuffles the front bench and see what effect it will have inside the ranks.

personally, i dont think rudd will have the support to overcome howard on a populist or purely oppositional basis (despite the unpopularity of the iraq war and the ir reforms), so if the so called dream team want to win the next election, they will need to come up with some innovative and original policies for once.

john howard is not cute, he is an arrogant, out of touch old man who has grown complacent in his leadership. Anonymous, if you really think the Liberals are polite I suggest you watch parliament time and witness a procession of narrow minded, gloating boys laugh at an opposition that no longer has any say. What we are living under is not a democracy. Nothing is debated anymore, what howard wants, howanrd gets. It's a disgrace.
Australians can be voted the world's dumbest nation if the liberals win again in 2007, as howard has lied about everyhting and we don't mind! I think that if a leader lies about the reason for going to war then there has to be some retribution, not to mention all the other things that this government has done that I disagree with. There is more to life than a (falsely inflated) economy and I hope Australians realise this and decide to regain true democracy by restoring balance in the House.
