Great answer, Julia

February 5th 2009 20:30

I could never imagine being in the limelight and having everything from my clothes to my make-up to my shoes to my presentation and practically anything else being put under the microscope and torn to shreds.

So when our Deputy Prime Minister responded to fashion designer Allanah Hills suggestion that she needed a makeover with a short “I know”, she highlighted more than her “smarts”.

There was a time when walking up to someone and saying this would have been regarded as just plain rude and I think it still is. Obviously, it isn’t by Allanah Hill because in yesterday’s Daily Telegraph she recounts her meeting Gillard on a Melbourne to Sydney flight last year when she came forward with the suggestion.

In the article she is quoted as saying “I mean this in the nicest possible way but she needs to start from the feet up”. It's the hair, the make-up, the clothes, everything”.

I happen to think that Julia Gillard has a pretty good style overall. After all, she is a politician – not a catwalk model. Even if I didn't, I could never say this to Gillard or anyone else. It is difficut enough even if people ask your opinion.

Experts! Don’t you just love them?

There's nothing quite like a short sharp answer is there Teresa?

Thanks for the visit.

How unbelievably rude! Perhaps Allannah should walk a mile in Julia's boring looking shoes and see how she goes.

Anyway, why oh why would anyone take style tips from a woman who wears more make up than most drag queens! If I ever run into Ms Hill maybe I should go up to her and tell her that less is more and that caked makeup makes you look like you've had a mortician do your face. Oh meow!

very true!

i think she looks alright, she looks professional and business-like, and that what you should look like in the workplace

i like her tailored suits in muted colours which compliment her size and shape . . . and her hair always looks clean and well-groomed

and i know many red-heads opt for minimal makeup because less is more if you are fair featured (we dont want her looking like a $2 hooker now do we?)

Nicola Roxon and Kevins wife however . . . now thats a different story!

I think it's totally irrelevant what she looks like so I'll just say.... go Julia!

Cheryl,

I suspect it was actually a business propositon. Allanah Hill probably thought she could be the next female government representative style guru.

Whatever the motive, I think it was tactless all the same. And good on Julia for her answer.

Morgan, it goes without saying that female politicians try to look their best but that is not and should be not what is all important.

Gillard is often deputising for Rudd and while image is important, there are so many other things she is lookling after.

Not like catwalk models, where looks are everything. I think in the whole scheme of things, Julia is doing very well.

Yeh, yeh. I think so too. While looks can give some off some sort of persona, who is a so called fashion guru to call herself some sort of God of fashion?

Maybe she was hoping to get some business out of it. Who knows?

Thank you for visiting.

Way to go Julia! I like Julia's style, her make-up is natural and her hair is always well styled. She's a politician, she's not running for Miss Universe! Honestly, people need to really get a grip. I would personally not want to look like Allanah Hill, that's for sure!

Thanks Justicia. It seems we both think much alike.

Take care.

If only they'd get stuck into the male pollies the way they get stuck into the female ones.
There are some swish dressers, there are some fashion tragics, male and female, but that should be totally irrelevant!
This is politics, not who's the best looking.
BTW my former federal politician used to light my fire - David Fawcett. A good Christian family man, but gee he was cute (I'm a happily married mother, but even so - I'm allowed to look!). And a good local member, a good performer in parliament as well.
I don't side with the Liberal party that often, but I would vote for him again if he runs next time. He is much better than the young bloke who beat him - Nick Champion. David Fawcett has a military background and it showed in everything he did. He's knowledgable, interested, and has a strong commitment to whatever he is doing.

I agree that people need to practice a bit more couth - but if they did what would we bloggers have to write about?

Carolyn

The men do get off lightly compared to the women don't they? Even if Ms Hill had volunteered the same sort of criticism of a male politician I would still think it was out of order.

Thank you for dropping in.

That's true. Maybe we could write about how polite they all were!

Thanks for the comment.

Well she may find that Permanent Makeup has a lot to offer her particularly considering the busy schedule that she would have.

There is nothing quite like waking up in the morning with half of the makeup routine already completed.

That's pretty amazing CT but I honestly don't think Julia Gillard needs it.

Perhaps you can shed some light on this for me though. I have always wondered what a person who had cosmetic tattooing did once the lipstick shade they chose goes out of fashion or the eyebrows start to age into that bluey colour?

What do they do?

And.....thanks for the comment.

Women have their own beauty in different stage of ages, Janet and I loved Julia's optimistic attitude!

Yes, Wilson.

Julia Gillard is fine in my books and you're right she is certainly positive.

Thank you for the comment.

Hi Janet
It is not advisable to have lips so bright that it would look out of fashion, a subtle application is always advised. Most people generally just enhance their natural lip colour by a few shades which looks great when you put on a lip gloss, and you still have the option of wearing lipstick over the top if you want a different colour.

With the eyebrows it is only the very old colours that faded to blue, now days the pigments are more advanced so they just tend to fade and become a little lighter as they get older. It is recommended that cosmetic tattooing is touched up every 3 - 5 years to keep it looking optimal.

If someone does have blue eyebrows from older lower quality work this can be corrected by an experienced cosmetic tattooist, like me

Thanks for that CT. i have often wondered about a tattooed eyebrow job but always dismissed it because of the many rumours I heard about it.

It is good to know that the more modern procedure is a lot more advanced.

Take care!

Well I'd like to think that if Julia isn't fussing over her looks then she's spending her time doing her job....which is what she was elected for.

Love & stuff

Hey Mrs M

Thanks. I think she is doing fine in her job. Just remember, she is not only our Deputy Prime Minister but has actually been Acting Prime Minister so often since they came into power.

A lot more to think about than Allanah Hill I would say.

Thanks again and it's good to see you around again.
