What’s the Point of IQ Testing?
January 5th 2009 10:07
There is something strange I think about the idea of testing your own IQ for yourself so that you can prove to yourself how smart or otherwise you are. There have always been some curious trends in testing candidates for jobs – tests that cover intelligence, personality or numeracy.
Now I can understand the numeracy, but I can never understand the intelligence or the personality tests because basically most jobs are about knowledge, skills and adaptability.
For a while now there have been some rather bold type ads on the internet that challenge us to test our IQ. According to the ads, Kevin Rudd, Jennifer Aniston and Britney Spears all have the same IQ of 125. So what does that say? Does it mean that Kevin Rudd has done rather well for himself or that he could have done just as well in a music or acting career? Does it mean that Britney could have made it into office?
I looked up the numbers and that puts them all in the “above average” category which ranges from 115 to 129.
This is how they define the scores –
40 – 54 Severely challenged
55 – 69 Challenged
70 – 84 Below average
85 – 114 Average
115 – 129 Above Average
130 – 144 Gifted (2.3%) of test takers)
The ads used to say something that was really enticing like "Just how dumb are you? Take the IQ test". But just say I did and came up with a score of 53 or even 64. Would that make me feel good? Or just say I got 141 or even 146. I think I would feel like I had wasted my life, or at least a chance at a brilliant career.
So, what’s the point?

I am glad someone agrees wth me. If someone can't do the most basic things what's the point of having a high IQ score?
Thank you for the visit.

It only tests what you want it to test.
