Foundation of Lies: An expensive health tick for McDonalds !

February 6th 2007 12:33

The Australian Heart Foundation has finally sold out. The little tick you love and trust - the red and white logo you see a guarantee of diet-safe eating now has the worth of a Parental Advisory Sticker. No-one listens, no-one cares and most people try to remove them as soon as they get the product home. Welcome to 2007 - the Year of the Dolphin? No, the year of lies and deceit.

Up for Grabs !
McDonald's is working up a healthy profit though. Nine 'meals' (can you call them meals?) have the tick of approval - a great reason for eating at the fat-packed 'restaurant'. The nine ticks probably arrived with a postcard from whatever holiday the Foundation reps bought with the cash: "Dear McDonald's, Thanks for the $330,000, wish you were here - Love, Susan Anderson and Co.".

Cynical? In a radio interview with the ABC, Sydney-based nutritionist said "we've got to live with reality". She followed on to say: "I would love to walk into a fast food outlet where everything was healthy, was low in fat, high in fibre, lots of vegetables, lots of salad, but it isn't available". Hang on, if it isn't available, does that mean McDonald's isn't actually good for us?

The Social Critic went undercover to check the facts (well, we went to Calorie King). There's 19 calories in McDonald's Garden salad, including 1.8 grams of sugar. Not bad - but that doesn't have dressing. A Deli Choice seems more realistic... 378 calories and 9.7 grams of fat in each Thai Chicken burger. That's your healthiest Deli option. You'd most likely get fries and a coke with that too, the smallest servings of which will set you back 355 calories combined.

Based on these facts - could we start a writing group and get a heart foundation tick for that ? And how much would it cost us?

Tragic perversion of what was intended to save lives into what will most likely cost lives.
The heart foundationtck will become corrupted to the point that will need to be removed.

Anthony,

I'm not as outraged about this as everyone else seems to be. At least McDonalds are giving people healthier options to consider. I mean we all know that everyone will buy the burger rather than the salad, but at least they've given them the option.

I'm not sure I think that it means that those items deserve the Tick....but at least they've done more than most fast food places. I mean, subway are heavily promoting their subs with less than 6 grams of fat. But that's only if they don't contain dressing or cheese. Add those onto your sub and you're looking at about 14 grams of fat (good old Calorie King!). So they're all sneaky I guess is what I'm saying.

Love your rant. Keep those bastards honest!!!

Kylie

I remember years ago hearing about companies paying for the heart foundation tick, though I'd never seen any evidence to back it up. I notice now that their latest ad says it can't be bought, so I'm guessing the rumours are catching up with them.

I quite like the Deli Choice rolls, particularly the Thai and Tandoori ones. What I get at McDonalds depends what I'm in the mood for, but I like having the choice.

that tick is misleading anyway because as the age pointed out today a four n twenty pie brand, mccains 'healthy choice' pizzas and some other ready made meals have the tick and these products are nowhere near what anyone would consider healthy. it's just these things are slightly better than their counterparts.

the tick is also misleading because a lot of other products that are just as healthy or more better for you are without the tick and these products would be cheaper too because you pay extra for that tick.

Hi AnthonyB,

I think that this 'tic(k)' was set up to generate revenue from the word go. The Macdonalds "healthy choices' menu is one way to control the expected population boom *lol* what I don't understand is why you would kill off Australians, after paying $4,000 each to create them?

What's more frightening ... the fact that it's obvious, blatant corruption and BS; or the fact that within five years, so many will believe it?

Or are times changing?

Great Post!

McDonalds has been pushing to make their food fall in line with people's health expectations, but all I've noticed is that the food is still fatty, but now tastes awful.

I bet it's all the work of that darned Hamburgler.

Damo and Kylie;

You're both right. It's true that McDonald's have made an effort. Sort of. They're food is still bad for you and they hide that behind salads and stuff that people won't actually order. Deli Choices are a good option but as we know they're far from perfect.

Damo you couldn't be more correct. I think the heart foundation is certainly taking a wrong turn here. You just can't endorse a restaurant that will serve bad food - regardless of how good some meals may be. It sends the wrong message. People don't look at the nine meals and choose to eat them because of the tick - they see the tick as an endorsement of the restaurant, not individual meals. Just like Subway.

CHEAP GIMMICKS !!!

You guys are great, cheers !

Nina;

I guess that's Karma. I've seen those vending machine ads. Anyone can buy the tick with enough money. I might buy a tick to endorse my University essays. Might get me a few extra marks. As we know, large companies are compulsive liars. It's an inevitability.

Stanley;

There's a lot this Heart Foundation could be doing to help people. Instead, they're screwing us all over with their frozen meals and fatty restaurants. Supersize me, anyone? The Biggest Loser would agree Maccas is good for you. They do eat at Subway. Though not like normal people. Slick, misleading endorsements. Not good for the wider community

Thanks guys, Love the comments

Ronald McDonald and the Hamburgler have a thing going on. I swear it. They conspire to bring the world dodgy food and that Kids Foundation is just a cover for an illegal drug ring. Meanwhile, times aren't changing, Maccas is bad for everybody but some people, after clubbing, or haven't not had time to eat, will see a McDonalds nearby and think

" gee, my heart needs something healthy. " and use that as an excuse to fill their arteries with fat. Disgusting. I wish I could answer your questions Lilla, but I'm tired and i leave for Sydney bright and early tommorrow

Thanks for posting; cibby and Lilla

Who's paying you Anthony? Subway?? Burger King??

People always target McDonalds (even me), and forget that there are other fast food chains who do nothing to improve their menu.

But then again I suppose the reason McDonalds draw criticism is because they are constantly trying to improve their image - and it ends up looking false. Like mutton dressed as a lamb, McDonalds is a greasy, fast food chain dressing up as a trendy, healthy diner.

ChrisB;

Valid criticism. Some say Hungry Jacks is worse and Subway is a terrible option for anyone on a diet, unless you want to eat bread and lettuce.

But I love to rag on McDonalds. They have this facade that they care about healthy dining. It's absolute crap. At least the others are honest about what they're selling. Subway will recieve no accolades on this blog though.

Cheers buddy.

Mike Hunt;

I'm guessing you work for Maccas. No career options? Failed English? I know the type. Best of luck with your doomed life.

Love, Anthony.

P.S. Sorry, you're homophobic, aren't you? This world wasn't meant for you, and neither was this blog.
