It's Getting Hot in Here (So Hot)

January 5th 2007 12:20
IF Nelly had his way, we would all be naked. A few years ago, I would have laughed at the prospect of it - but now, it's an option worth considering.

Heat Wave (Europe '03) looking similar in '07

Global warming is threatening the world, and although the world is only frying at an extra degree (celsius) every 100 odd years, it seems to affecting weather patterns.

Meteorologists described Australia's Dec 24th barbeque preceeding Victoria's white christmas as 'unusual'. No, really? Unusual you say? Even in Melbourne, we don't expect Mother Nature to be so sporadic. By the way, I mean barbeque almost literally. Bushfires threatened and destroyed much of the Victorian countryside - the rain and snowfall arriving just in time to protect the Alps.

Oh, but that's Australia - the sunburnt country, I hear you say. Well drop me a line when New York recieves their first snowflake. Even in Europe, you'll find water where ice should be. This isn't just strange, it's decidedly frightening.

Sorry Nelly, I don't think anyone will be taking a ride with you this summer. Do you have air-conditioning? Never mind. You prediction has proved truer than you could have imagined. It is getting hot in here. Maybe we should take off all our clothes...

If you want some 7 day forecasts, across the globe ( which I can assure you are looking grim ) visit Concierge Weather. They also have nice travel ideas. My tip - head to Vancouver. You're looking at around 10 degrees celsius.

It has been quite warm lately. We haven't seen snow yet in NY, and it might be over 70 degrees Fahrenheit tomorrow.

hey Anthony,

I was just talking about this topic with some friends the other day. It has been a mild Winter again this year in Calgary. When I look at photos of when I was a little kid , there was deep snow coming up to my waist. These days (15 to 20 years later), there is hardly any snow what so ever. And every Winter has been getting shorter and shorter, warmer and warmer.
When there's not much of a Winter in Calgary anymore, you know something's up.

20 years ago, you used to be happy that Summer temps reached 20 to 25 degrees. Now they are consistently above 25 degrees with many days or weeks of 30 to 35 to 39 degrees! Whoa, that is way too hot for me. When you need to install air conditioning in Calgary, something's really up.

I know, it is terribly hot !! Its getting close to 100 fahrenheit here in Melbourne. I hope you can still write sonnets !! I hope mid-january brings you the white stuff.

Thanks for posting !

Hey Peg,

Yeah, I know. How is Iginla expected to perform if the ice rinks are melting? I hope you're speaking in Fahrenheit... It's unusual for anywhere to get temperatures like that in Celsius...

Thank you for the insight. I have never experienced snow Maybe I'll visit Alaska or something...

Thanks all for your comments

Did you notice how cute Iginla is? Maybe his hotness is melting the ice rinks and causing all this global warming mess.

ha ha I guess you're pulling my leg with your no one gets temps like 30 degrees in Summer comment. Not everywhere is supposed to be as hot as Oz, you know.
btw, I wouldn't know Fahrenheit to save my life.

Keep writing such worthwhile posts, buddy.

Hi AnthonyB,

...and yet here on lower Sunshine Coast/Brisbane/Glass House Moutnains, we have one of the coolest, wettest summers in ... forever ... well since 2002, when I first moved here.

B-e-a-u-tiful 20-26oC. This time last year I had had the air-con on for about an entire month, I can't believe it! After February it's all over and back to winter.. *woo hoo*

[Schhh, keep it quiet, don't want to regret talking too soon, you know?]

Another enlightening, engaging and entertaining post,
Keep 'em coming AB,

Lilla.

Have you seen the movie an Inconvenient Truth?

Man, that scared the hell out of me. First, we'll run out of water, then we'll get flooded or burn to death!

hey Peg!

I thought Canada operated in Fahrenheit. I'd like to say I'm pulling your leg, but sadly I'm not. I thought Canada was meant to freeze over completely (in winter), bar the West Coast. By the way, Thank you for sending your firefighters to me. I need them. Well, not me so much, but you know..

Thanks for posting

Thank you Lilla. You write such lovely things. I'm glad your enjoying your summer whilst I burn to death. I bought some tees today - made in Turkey and they feel like rash tops. Keeps me nice and cool. Sort of like a lizard.. Thank you !!!

Hey Always Eighteen.
I wish I could be your age forever. Sadly in May (this year) I will be 19 I haven't seen an inconvenient truth. I was meaning too, but Al Gore just doesn't have the sex appeal of Holly Vallance (I'm still thinking about DOA). I'll get on to that one. Hopefully we'll burn then flood. That would be refreshing.. and convenient - ironically.

Thanks for posting all

Sorry to hear about all the fires you guys are having. Are they still raging? Is it calming down at all? I'm glad Canadian Firefighters have gone to help out our Australian brothers and sisters.

That's okay. You didn't cause the fires... did you? Heh, yeah I think with all these fire people and the fire traps that have been set up, everything should be fine. They've kind of contained the blaze, so it looks promising. Less damage is being caused now. I only hope we have enough water to fight it with.. heheh.

Thanks for your concern, Peg

sounds like you guys are making some headway.

We also had massive, uncontrollable wildfires the last several of Springs / Summers in my province (Alberta) and B.C. (province next to us). I wouldn't be surprised if there are more this year.

Luckily, the fires were not close to me but not so lucky for thousands of others who did have to be evacuated.

It really gets my goat that most of these horribly destructive forest fires are caused by humans thoughtlessness (throwing lit cigarette out car windows or not completely extinguishing camp fires) or even worse yet - idiot arsonists who get their jollies purposefully setting blazes.

AnthonyB,

One of the things I love most about Melbourne is our varied climate. But it is getting ridiculous. Just about dying of heat exhaustion one day and then it's snowing the next???? Something is definitely going on.
Despita all those politicians who claim that global warming isn't happening.

Also - by the way, can't believe that you liked DOA too. I just saw that movie a week ago and loved it (despite the lack of plot and dodgy acting........actually it's probably because of those things that I really liked it!!).
