“That’s the Devil, man”: Speak ‘gangsta’ in less in 10 minutes.
January 10th 2007 11:33
There’s no wrong or right path to becoming a gangsta, but here are some pointers to get you ‘respect’ in ‘the hood’:
Shorten EVERYTHING. Words like ‘aight’ (derived from all right) and ‘bro’ (brother) are such examples.
From now on, anywhere is either ‘The Bronx’ or ‘Chino’. It'll make you sound dangerous.
“Whatever”: Your key to success. Change it around by saying “whatever (man, bro, cat, dog)”. Combine with stupid, meaningless nicknames to get your ‘posse’ sounding more ‘real’, ya feel me?
Showing affection
Rappers show affection through the assumed deference of particular words. e.g. “you my homeboy” equates to “you are my closest friend”, because you feel warm and safe at home. Substitute boy for girl, rat, tree.. depending on the situation. Some further examples:
Guys: “Damn, bro, she tha bomb” means “I would like to meet that elegant lady”
Ladies: “Mmm-mm! I’d like a piece o’ that arse” means “Lovely boy. Will he approach me?”
Bomb, because it's explosive, relates to a feeling of love. Arse represents a person.
To help you on your way:
“Pha-Shiz”: Derived from some kind of American ‘rap speak’, this term is synonymous with “cool”, “wicked” or “I concur”. Don’t use it all the time. Everyone will think you’re an idiot.
“That’s the shit!”: Originally, this term was slang for “that’s the way”, but it gets thrown around a lot, and could mean anything. Scholars maintain the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.
“That’s the Devil, man!”: Again, very confusing. If something is appealing or interesting, use it to score ‘cool’ points with your friends. Also appropriate if you actually see the devil.
Still stuck? Songs like “Smack That” and anything from 50 cent are the perfect dictionaries to get you on the down-low, hip cat.
Anything to add? Post it up, and have fun being gangsta!

Thanks for adding to my education. It's a culture that's intruding more and more into our language.
My tolerance is declining.
katyzzz.........Well done

One day we'll organise a rap session. Perhaps we'll press a double album - just for fun.

I love it!
Also, replace the letter T with a D wherever possible. For example 'I didn't do nuddin' instead of 'I didn't do anything'.
Great post. I especially love 'Bomb, because it's explosive, relates to a feeling of love'. That's inspired.

I used to work out Dandenong way. That was like working in the Bronx. But we should perhaps take a field trip to Doncaster some day.
Hehe, I like Special K. That's my gangsta name!

Thanks Francis !!\
Yes Lilla, it's a shameless copy of wicked. One of my mates invented it when he saw my t-shirt with a devil on it. He thought it sounded 'trippin'.
Kylie, i am pleased to hear you have connections ! Its always great to have you visit, but moreso now that I have your posse for protection.
Keep the balance right, Special K
Cheers for posting, all
