Separate Strollers for Separated Twins
December 22nd 2009 05:49
One of the best human interest stories this year or even this decade would have to be the recent one about the separation of cojoined Bangladeshi-born twins, Krishna and Trishna, at our own Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne.
That was five weeks ago and, despite serious setbacks in the recovery period, the twins left hospital in separate strollers yesterday in time for their third birthday today. A statement from the hospital said that doctors had been amazed by their progress since the surgery. They will spend Christmas and their birthday with their legal guardian Moira Kelly, head of Australia’s Children First Foundation.
The twins were brought to the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne from a Bangadeshi orphanage and endured a operation in November that lasted more than 30 hours to allow them to live separately. The girls were joined at the head and shared a number of systems, including kidney, stomach and blood pressure and doctors had initially given the operation a 25 per cent chance of success.
They now have separate beds, separate strollers and Kelly insists that there will be two birthday cakes for them today. Continued medical care and observation is still necessary but the twins can now do this as outpatients at the hospital.
Such independence will take a little time to get used to I would think.
