China’s Star Pig
December 24th 2008 08:58
Celebrity antics are not limited to humans it was revealed this week after staff who have been minding China’s most famous pig reported the worsening behaviour including increased stubbornness, chronic laziness and refusing to appear for fans.
The pig had found fame after surviving the massive Suchuan earthquake in May which left him trapped in a sty and buried in the rubble for a massive 36 days.
“Zhu Jiangiang” (strong pig) was the name given to the pig by a local Beijing businessman who bought him and organised a new home for the pig in a museum where people have been coming from all over to see the star.
It appears that fame as taken its toll. Darker stories about Zhu Jiangiang emerged this week after it was voted the most favourite animal that “moved China” in an online poll. Staff revealed they can no longer take the pig on a daily walk because it is too fat and lazy to do so. The once fan-friendly pig now blocks the door to its bedroom when there are too many visitors outside staff now say.
Other animals that polled strongly were a dog that guarded its elderly owner when he was sick and accompanied him to hospital and a cat that almost died of grief after its partner was run over by a car.
Organisers of the poll said the pig “vividly illustrated the spirit of never giving up”. Whether or not the star status has altered the behaviour of the dog and the cat has not been revealed.
