Turn it up! AWB Luvs ENRON 4eva
November 30th 2006 11:23
We all know Enron was fast growing energy company with radical ideas to revolutionise the industry. In fact, Bethany McLean wrote a book entitled "The Smartest Guys in the Room". In fact, they were so intelligent - they were able to skyrocket shares to near $90 a piece, without making any money. WOW ! Unfortunately Trevor Flugge from the Australian Wheat Board felt in 2001 that he could learn from Enron's failure that same year and perfect the mission impossible. Assignment: conduct large-scale corporate theft successfully. Of course, they failed when records of the US$5mil of wheat that was sent to Saddam was eventually found. But now I want to expose the real story behind the AWB and Enron. The tale of a middle-aged little boy who dreamed of becoming a criminal... and maybe fell in love along the way...
Jeffrey Skilling (Enron CEO) had a strange culture of machismo to maintain. The team went on dirt biking trips, fishing, hunting - you name it, they did it (except work). Well if Flugge had any hope of pulling off this million-dollar trade scam, he had better create a solid social culture too. What did he do? Probaby nothing - maybe he snapped open a couple of coldies and whacked a lamb on the barbie, who knows. But in doing whatever he did or didn't do, he managed to get his photo taken sitting on a coach, shirt-off, wielding a pistol (Above). Surprise, Surprise! Typical Aussie wifebeater. Nevertheless, that culture of machismo was evident !
Yes, we can be proud of "The AWB's Dirty Dozen" (The Age, Nov. 2006) - oh hang on... wait wait... no, if i'm not mistaken, Enron had a similar headline: "Meet the dirty dozen of business"... When you have two corporate scandals in two culturally similar countries both being described by the very same hackneyed expression - that's when fate throws up its hands and says "Not my work. Not even I could have pulled this off." So is Trevor Flugge no more than an atypical, prepubescent girl lusting his poster boy? YES !! HE IS !! It all fits, I don't believe it, it fits!
You'll see it on A Current Affair, on The Today Show, on Today Tonight... but you saw it here first. The Social Critic tackles the issues that matter most to you. Tell me what you think - while the Cole Inquiry is still dishing out jail sentences.

Either way, I don't think it will cost him votes in the countdown to next year's election. There's virtually no opposition. Thanks for posting too, Kylie !! It's great to hear what other Aussie reckon.. even if you are from Sydney
