Boxing Day Shopping – You don’t have to be mad but it certainly helps
December 26th 2008 09:54
I have never quite understood why, after doing all the pre-Christmas shopping in crowds and putting up with all that stress, so many people want to go out again on Boxing Day for more punishment.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a pretty keen shopper myself and I’m certainly partial to a good bargain, but one of the worst things I could imagine doing on Boxing Day would be to head for the shops, lining up for hours to get into them and putting myself at great risk of being trampled to death.
Every year the nightly news is full of all the people who have lined up for hours to get great bargains and this year was no exception. Some of the stores in the city even opened at a ridiculous 5:00am!
No, Boxing Day for me means a good sleep in after a great long Christmas Day and either hitting the beach, going for one of those great walks around the harbour or joining some friends for more festive cheer.
Those bargain hunters can have the Boxing Day sales all to themselves.

I agree, I like a good bargain too, but Boxing Day is my designated Slob Day. A time for rest and recuperation.

Are people really so desperate to shop all the time?

And there's bound to be some great sales in the coming months anyway. Maybe some people just like all the excitement at the shops on Boxing Day.
Thanks for visiting.

I think shopping and the malls have become a social scene over the last few decades. Some head for the beach and others head for the shops. But shops on Boxing Day? I couldn't think of anything worse.
Thanks for visiting.

Shops in Australia once upon a time used to be open Monday to Friday all day and Saturday mornings till noon. Thursday night shopping was introduced a long time ago.
Then in the eightees Saturdays slowly became full days and eventually Sunday shopping was introduced. In recent years public holidays also opened up for retail trading.
The shops have become the place to go every day. Boxing Day bargains for me aren't worth the stress of the crowds.
