A Whingeing Pom?
June 13th 2009 03:00
While many are losing their jobs and their nest eggs and can’t see an end in site to their woes, a Brit has found something else to complain about.
Ben Southall, the Brit who won the Best Job in the World as Caretaker on Hamilton Island in the Barrier reef for six months, complete with a three bedroom house and $100,000 in pay, is already complaining – and he hasn’t even started yet.
In an interview with UK’s The Sun, Southall says he will miss the long days of England’s summer and will pine for roast dinners.
More than 34,000 people from around the globe went through a stringent selection process that first cut the suitable applicants down to the Top 50 and then the Top 16. In May, Southall was announced as the winner of the prized job.
These latest comments by Mr Southall of Australia are at odds with the comments made by Queensland’s Tourism Minister, Peter Lawlor when the announcement was made early last month.
At the time, Lawlor said Mr Southall not only had the skills to perform the role and had demonstrated an ability to grow and maintain a loyal following but that Ben had excelled in showing a true passion for Queensland.
His passion for our tropical paradise appears to have already waned if his recent comments are anything to go by. Southall starts the job on 1 July.
Some people just don’t know when to count their blessings.

I actually applied for this one myself, so it is REALLY interesting to see what has transpired. .
WHAT A BLOODY LOOSER, makes you wonder why he applied in the first place.. . Gosh, what a waste, truly, I would have been sooooooo much better for this job, and I mean to say. . I already had a blog gong int he first place not to mention my prowess in the kitch and the ability to cook my own Sunday roasts *slapping my forehead*
Seriously though, I wouldn*T be surprised if this is a publicity stunt too, you just can*t tell these days, look at Bruno and M&M . . no doubts his ongoing blog will now be the most popular blog in the world?
LIke I said, a shame, I would have been better for the job hands down.

I am sure - even positive - you would have been much better for the job. I am also pretty sure it would have definitely gone to an outsider. After all, the whole thing was about publicising Hamilton Island and can you imagine the coverage it got overseas. If it had been an Australian who won, it would not have had nearly as much publicity, particularly overseas.
Bad luck, Lilla. Keep your ears to the ground though. Ben sounds like a bit of a sook and maybe the opportunity will come around again!
Thanks for sharing.
