Bundanoon's Water is Back on Tap
July 9th 2009 00:15
Bundanoon is to become Australia’s First Bottled Water-Free Town after four hundred people turned out to Bundanoon Memorial Hall last night and made history, voting to ban bottled water from their town. Only two cast dissenting votes in what has been said to be the town’s largest community gathering.
Yesterday I posted the background story to the vote. Power to the Grass Roots told how local businessman Huw Kingston had rallied together support throughout the community after a Sydney company had applied to pump water from their town to supply the bottled water market.
Kinsgston’s dream was realised last night when the town voted for the installation of free water fountains along the main street of the town. Businesses can replace the bottled water with empty containers and they can direct customers to the water fountains to fill them. The business community had been behind him all the way.
The issue sparked national and international attention before the people of Bundanoon had formalised the voluntary ban. So much so that late yesterday, NSW Premier, Nathan Rees, announced the banning of commercially bottled water from all state departments and agencies, including the large water cooler refill bottles.
Maybe commercially bottled water will soon become a thing of the past.

A little bit of me has a bit of sympathy for the water cooler companies, but not a lot. They have made a lot of money over the years marketing our own water back to us and having us pay dearly for it. It is also a big environmental problem.
I love it when "small" people make a big big difference. It doesn't happen often enough.
Thank you.
