The End of the Printing Press?

April 1st 2009 02:54

What has to be a hell of a April Fools’ Day hoax is the story about the Guardian newspaper’s announcement today that it will become the first newspaper in the world to be exclusively published via Twitter.

It’s a lot of fun if you have the time to read it. This is just some of the information from the article:

Defending the move to Twitter, the publishers of The Guardian used experts’ advice that any story can be told in 140 characters, but skeptics have challenged this idea saying this length would remove vital information from the stories.

It will not only be future editions of the Guardian on Twitter, they say. Already a mammoth project is also under way to rewrite the whole of the newspaper’s archive, stretching back to 1821, in the form of tweets.

The Guardian publishes are moving faster than this. They have collaborated with Twitter to instigate the launch of Gutter, an experimental service designed to filter noteworthy liberal opinion of the cacophony of Twitter updates. This service can be used by gutter members to comment on liberal blogs around the world using a tool developed by WordPress called GutterPress.

Oh yeah, right.

Yes it was good wasn't it, Chris. They could have been a bit more clever and at least made it seem more believable but it was funny all the same.

Do you think they were also having a shot at bloggers?

imagine trying to summarise every detailed article into a tweet! haha

YouTube did a prank today and had some of the videos appearing upside down

They could have made the whole article a bit more believable I think but it was fun anyway. Real news stories into 145 characters? I don't think so.

It was really one of the middle-of-the-night wake ups. Still I reckon I could be be nocturnal if other things didn't get in the way

Why stop there? I think that really there is no need for novels anymore. We should just twitter them instead. You no longer have to read the whole version of War and Peace. Just get the twitter version and get the entire story in 140 characters!

One of the comments went: 10 years from now this will read as premature history. I don't think so, but it was a very fun article. Thanks for pointing it out!

Well, Janet. With all those Twitter, Flutter (Or, maybe "Peanut Butter"?), no wonder the printing press industry has to come to the end...
