A Second-hand Shopping Day Gone Wrong
April 6th 2010 15:17
What would you do if you “found” $100,000? Would you give it back? It is a really difficult question to answer because I think if most of us were put in that situation, I think we would probably keep it.
An innocent purchase at a Salvation Army store has brought up the whole dilemma of “found money” and who is the rightful owner.
The story went like this. A couple purchased a suitcase from a Salvation Army store in Beaconsfield, Melbourne. A really innocent transaction really. Little did they know that stashed in the lining was $100,000. Quite a surprise they would have had when they took the suitcase home and found the hidden treasure.
The trouble is that the owner of the suitcase, once he discovered the suitcase was gone with the money inside, contacted the Salvation Army and the police got into the act. His wife, unbenowingly, had sent the suitcase off with some other things to clean up the place.
Now the people who bought the case have been charged after they put the money into their various bank accounts.
This whole episode leads me to wonder about a few things. Found money puts us in a real dilemma doesn’t it?
What would you do in this situation? Would you keep it or would you fess up?

It all seems a little bit rough that the couple have been charged over the whole thing. It is not like they stole it or even took it intentionally.
I think the original owner of the suitcase should be satisfied enough about getting it back. It would have to be pretty unusual to be able to locate someone following a purchase as small as this one.
You make a very good point. If it had been $20, the police would not have even wasted their time looking for them.
Thanks for dropping in.
