A Master’s Degree at 96
June 12th 2009 08:45
To beat boredom in retirement, Chao Mu-he from Taiwan took up studying for a master’s degree. At the age of 96 he will receive his master’s degree in philosophy from Nanhua University in southern Taiwan.
Known endearingly to his university classmates as “Grandpa Chao”, the 96 year old embarked on his studies after being told he was too old to continue to do the volunteer work he was doing at a nearby hospital.
The secret in competing with younger students, he said, was his ability to pull all-nighters, waking up and midnight the night before an exam and studying the night through. This compensated him, he believes, for a much poorer memory than his young classmates which had given him something of a handicap.
Chao specialised in the works of Chuangtze, a 4th century BC Taoist master. It is unknown if Chao is the oldest student to receive a masters degree as no records of older age students seem to be available.

Wow, nothign but admiration for this fellow too. I remember hearing (briefly, in passing somewhere [over the airwaves]), of a woman in Australia who graduated at 93, but I am not sure whether it was her masters or not?
Having only recent achieved mine at 45 I can really understand about our ability to retain information as we get older, but wasn*t old enough to be able to stay up all night either, so i guess (judging by his comment) I can consider that I did it tough? *chuckle*
Power to anyone who continues to educate themselves throuhgout life, knowledge really is power, but mostly over oneself first and foremost as it takes a lot of self discipline to achieve at any age.
I love hearing news like this Janet, thanks for sharing.

I love writing about people like Chao. I too gained mine quite late in life but the really remarkable thing is that he did it because he was bored.
Thank you for your comment.
